South West Region of Tasmania

Australia

Tasmanians love their local regions - the west coasters their mountains, the east coasters their beaches and dunes.

The north mid-landers revere their history and heritage, and the north-westers their fertile farmlands.

Surtsey Surprises

Young Island Already Looks Millions of Years Old

Surtsey is a volcanic island ‘born’ in 1963 off the coast of Iceland.

Yet in less than a decade, there were ‘land features that typically

take tens of thousands or millions of years to form’, according to

an evolutionary geologist.

"But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom

you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to

make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration

of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that

the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."

Letter - 2nd Timothy  ch.3  vs.14-17.  The Holy Bible - New King James Version

The Gordon River is one of Tasmania’s major rivers, flowing west from the central mountains into Macquarie Harbour. The river is located in the

Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. In 1982 the Tasmanian Government proposed

to build a dam on the Gordon River below its junction with the Franklin River as part of a major hydro-electricity scheme. The proposal, which

would have inundated large sections of the Gordon River and Franklin River valleys as well as highly significant Aboriginal heritage sites, prompted

widespread outcry and protest. The issue culminated in a famous challenge in the High Court in Commonwealth v Tasmania (1983).
